Bullying and Hate – What You Need to Know

This guide helps young people understand what bullying and hate are, how they can happen, and what to do if they experience or witness it. It explains the different forms bullying can take, including in-person bullying and online bullying (cyberbullying), and provides examples of behaviours such as name-calling, threats, spreading rumours, or sharing harmful content online.

The page also explains what hate is, including when someone targets another person because of their race, religion, disability, sexuality, gender identity or background, and highlights that hate can be a crime.

Young people are encouraged to speak up and seek help if they feel unsafe or targeted. The guide offers practical advice on how to stay safe, including blocking or reporting harmful online behaviour, saving evidence, and speaking to trusted adults.

It also outlines the support available in South Tyneside, including schools, youth workers, family hubs, school nurses, youth services, the police and online support such as Kooth. The guide reminds young people that bullying and hate are never their fault and that they have the right to feel safe, respected and supported.
